Aivy wasn’t in their suite when Nkarri got back from his appointments. He was almost glad. The frustration of dealing with Graf and the others had got to him today. They were all suffering the side effects he’d expected. Muscle spasms, pain, twitches. Some were mostly just irritated, while others were having trouble sleeping through the pain. Nkarri prescribed sleeping tablets and pain killers, but he wouldn’t use his ability on them again. Wouldn’t exacerbate the problem by giving in to their demands.

Nkarri scowled. He could deal with them being disgruntled. Could deal with them begging him to just treat them properly one more time. What had made him angry was Kritten coming in and demanding he do so, too.

“The Humans will start to suspect something is wrong if all my team go down with mysterious injuries. Get them back to full working order!”

“I can’t,” Nkarri told him. “It will damage them permanently. They’ll be in pain for the rest of their lives if I push them any further. Nature needs to take its course now. There’s nothing more I can do.”

“It’s not a case of ‘can’t’,” Kritten said, folding all of his arms. “It’s a case of ‘won’t’. Do I need to remind you what you were hired to do?”

“No,” Nkarri said. “I’ve read the contract enough times to know it inside out. You hired me to get them to that state, not to keep them there indefinitely. I told you they needed better food, better therapies. I told them they needed to do exercise and stretching routines. No one listened to me, and now you’re reaping the rewards for that.”

“I could have you and your brat thrown off this ship at the next port,” Kritten snapped, then stormed out of the room, stomping his feet and swearing effusively as he left.

Nkarri wasn’t sure if it was the threat or the fact that Kritten had referred to Aivy as a ‘brat’ that upset him more. Either way, he was grateful he needed to go out and find Aivy. It gave him a little more time to process his emotions, to get them back under control.

He checked his comm for the room AI’s location, but even as he waited for it to scan, he started heading in the direction of the gardens. Almost every time Aivy wasn’t in their rooms, he found her there. It was her favourite place on the ship. Sure enough, the locator on the AI bot showed it was in the gardens.

He wondered if she was pestering the gardening bots for information about the nutrient mixtures they fed the various plants again, or if she was measuring the growth of the eristracacia vines, or if she was lying on the floor under the cortusia tree as its blossoms drifted down around her. The kid loved plants the way most kids loved characters on their favourite shows. Nkarri had encouraged it, downloading her encyclopaedias that she was too young to read, but could look at all the pictures, the words waiting for when her reading fluency improved.
